OAKLAND, Calif. -- With a fabulous finish to the preseason, rookie Derek Carr created a big question for the Oakland Raiders heading into the regular season. Carr threw three touchdown passes to make a case he should be Oaklands starting quarterback as the Raiders beat the Seattle Seahawks 41-31 on Thursday night. Carr was almost perfect in the start in place of Matt Schaub, completing 11 of 13 passes for 143 yards and led Oakland (2-2) to four touchdowns in four drives. "Lets not burry our head in the sand," coach Dennis Allen said. "But I havent changed anything. I think were in good shape where were at with all of our quarterbacks and I feel good about being in the position were in." Schaub was anointed the starter after being acquired in an off-season trade from Houston. Coach Dennis Allen hasnt deviated from that plan even as Schaub struggled in the preseason before resting this game with a sore throwing elbow. Now the question will be if Carrs strong performance that included one touchdown drive against Seattles first-team defence or Schaubs health will be enough to change that plan before the opener against the New York Jets on Sept. 7. "Thats up for coach Allen to talk about," Carr said. "My job is to come in and compete my tail off and help this team win." The Seahawks (2-2) have no questions about their starting quarterback. Russell Wilson made the most of a brief cameo, completing three passes for 77 yards, including a 25-yard touchdown pass to Luke Willson on a four-play drive to open the game. "When I look back at this preseason the thing that jumps out at me is what our offence was able to do when the first group was in there," coach Pete Carroll said. "Russell had a phenomenal preseason statistically in every way. That group looks ready to play." The bigger question for the Super Bowl champions coming into this game was whether former Raiders quarterback Terrelle Pryor could show enough to earn a spot on the roster as a third quarterback. Pryor, booed by his former fans, played his best game of the preseason, going 11 for 17 for 134 yards and a 33-yard touchdown pass to Phil Bates. He also ran for 12 yards on four carries. DeShawn Shead also scored on a 55-yard interception return on a pass thrown by Matt McGloin. But this night was all about Carr, who said he was "less rookie" than he was two weeks ago with the starting offence when he yelled out the play in the huddle so loud that his teammates were afraid the defence could hear the call. The second-round pick out of Fresno State made the most of the starting assignment. He completed five passes on the opening drive, including a third-down conversion to Denarius Moore, who was covered by All-Pro Richard Sherman. Latavius Murray capped the drive with a 5-yard TD run. "I was really excited that they played," Carr said of Seattles starting defence. "You obviously want to play against the best. They have the ring to prove it. Thats what were chasing." Carr was just getting started, leading back-to-back one-play touchdown drives following big special teams plays. After a fumbled kickoff by Bryan Walters, Carr threw a 36-yard TD pass to Moore on the following play to give the Raiders a 14-7 lead. TJ Carries 45-yard punt return set up Oaklands next drive at the Seattle 20. On the next play, Carr threw a TD pass to Mychal Rivera, who made a great adjustment on a pass that was deflected by Malcolm Smith. Carr ended his night with an eight-play touchdown drive, capping it with a perfectly placed back-shoulder 11-yard throw to Moore. That gave Oakland a 28-7 lead and sent the crowd into a frenzy rarely seen in the preseason. That ended Carrs night and started what could be more than a week of questions about the opening day starter. "The great thing is we have three guys who could start at quarterback for us," Allen said. "Im very happy with where were at with the quarterback room. The biggest thing is to see where Matt is when he comes in Monday." NOTES: Walters had five kick returns for 137 yards, two punt returns for 13 yards and three catches for 47 yards as he tries to earn a spot on Seattles roster. ... Undrafted rookie George Atkinson III had eight carries for 63 yards for Oakland. ... McGloin threw a TD pass to Brice Butler, the fourth time the two had connected on a scoring play this preseason. Cleary also had two assists and Patrick Eaves added two goals for the Red Wings, who also ousted Phoenix in seven games during the first round of the 2010 postseason. Todd Bertuzzi had a goal and an assist for Detroit, which got a goal apiece from Tomas Holmstrom and Niklas Kronwall and suffered no shortage of offense despite the absences of Henrik Zetterberg and Johan Franzen. http://www.realmadridfcprohop.us/Marian ... id-Jersey/. Lack replaced an injured Roberto Luongo late in the first period then watched defenceman Chris Tanev score the winning goal midway through the third as the Vancouver Canucks defeated the Jets 2-1 in a tight NHL game. Scrivens stopped 48 shots and captain Andrew Ference scored in overtime as the Oilers pulled off a 4-3 upset of the Anaheim Ducks on Friday. CHICAGO -- Anthony Rizzo congratulated Jason Hammel for his first National League win after the Chicago Cubs topped the Pittsburgh Pirates. Only, it wasnt. Not even Hammels first this season. Hammel threw seven strong innings, Rizzo tied a career high with four hits, and Chicago won 7-5 on Wednesday night despite allowing five solo home runs. But Rizzo apparently forgot about Hammels victory last week -- or the 27 the veteran right-hander had with Colorado. "Just make sure that everybody knows that Rizzo was not there with us in Pittsburgh last week," a joking Hammel said. "Its a good one. Its a good one. "I didnt know I didnt win at all in Colorado, either." Signed to a one-year, $6 million contract over the off-season, Hammel (2-0) won his Cubs debut when he beat the Pirates in Pittsburgh. He got off to another good start in this one, retiring the first 12 batters until Pedro Alvarezs first homer of the game tied it to start the fifth. Hammel allowed three runs and three hits -- all solo homers -- while striking out six. Rizzo had his career-best fourth straight multi-hit game, Mike Olt and Junior Lake hit back-to-back home runs in the fifth against Wandy Rodriguez (0-2). Emilio Bonifacio, who entered leading the majors with 17 hits and a .515 batting average, was 2 for 5. Bonifacio had two runs for an offence that has scored 21 runs in its last three games after getting eight in its first five. "We had some well-struck balls," Cubs manager Rick Renteria said. "They did there at the end, too, so it was a good night to hit." The Pirates found that out as well on a night where the wind was blowing steadily out. Alvarez and Russell Martin homered twice for the Pirates, each getting their second in the ninth off Pedro Strop, and Travis Snider also went deep. It was Alvarezs second multihomer game of the season and ninth of his career, and it the eighth of Martins career, but Pittsburggh only had one hit besides its five solo home runs.dddddddddddd "Well, were not giving up," Martin said. "Were still fighting. Thats kind of in our DNA. No matter what the score is, were going to give our best effort. Were aware some days were going to get beat, but were never really going to cave in. Today they were better than us." Once again, the Cubs were better than Rodriguez, whom Hammel and Chicago beat for the second time. Rodriguez went five innings, giving up four runs and nine hits, keeping the Pirates from clinching their third straight series win to start the season, something they havent done since 1992. Rodriguez missed most of 2013 with a left forearm injury and Pirates manager Clint Hurdle called his performance an "optimistic outing." "Youve got to remember how long hes been away from the mound," Hurdle said. "He feels healthy. The first pitch strikes were good. A little more consistency and location, just execution at times." The Cubs offensive execution was better. Other than Rizzos congratulations to Hammel. "I was excited. We had a great atmosphere in here after the game," Rizzo said. "He pitched his tail off. We got him the W, so its nice. Hes off to a great 2-0 start." NOTES: Bonifacios hot start has given Renteria an easy choice to lead off. "Typically, if you can have a leadoff guy that you can slot in, its really big," Renteria said. ... Cubs OF Justin Ruggianos RBI double was his first hit of the season. He entered the game 0-for-11. ... The Cubs scored three times in the sixth, and the third came when Lake was originally called out at first on a double-play grounder, but Renteria challenged the call by umpire Mark Carlson, getting it overturned and allowing Rizzo to score. ... Pirates LHP Jeff Locke (right oblique) went six innings and allowed two runs and five hits while striking out 10 and walking one in a rehab outing at Single-A Bradenton.
